Week 3

Filed under: Uncategorized — iomracer @ 5:23 am

Welcome to week 3. NASCAR’s Championship season starts this week with the Daytona 500. They say that the Shootout (now called the Sprint Unlimited) doesn’t forecast the Daytona winner, but it’s difficult to ignore the strong performances of the likes of Tony Stewart who looked like a contender the whole race. But it is NASCAR, and it is Daytona (i.e. if there’s a crash it’s usually big), so anything can happen.

Scores from week 2:

NASCAR Sprint Unlimited:

The big crash was early in the event and took out 6 cars, including Ambrose, Johnson, Hamlin, Kyle Busch, and Jeff Gordon, all of whom were picked by one or more players. Myself and Rubbergoat also picked Brad Keselowski who wasn’t racing. For myself I had assumed that as series champion he must have had a pole position at some race last year, but apparently not (hence he didn’t qualify for this race).

Players Scores:

Congratulations to the week’s winner Sebastian, who was the only one to pick the race winner Harvick. Chris picked the second place driver Biffle, which bagged him second for the week. Rubbergoat and I were the big loses for not paying attention with Keselowski. In the early points standings I go from 1st to 5th, and Sebastian takes over the top spot…

  1. Guide and links here folks.

  2. Thanks to Sebastian for checking the scores generated by my computer program. His check revealed a silly coding flaw in which people were getting points shifted down by one. For example, Sebatian picked the NASCAR winner Harvick last week, but only scored 40 points (as if Harvick finished 2nd). Of course he should have scored 50. Everyone was impacted. I’ve made the coding correction and the updated the scores. You can see them at I’ll also post the corrected scores when week 4 is posted with this weeks results.

    Many thanks to Sebastian.

  3. A second correction needed (also thanks to Sebastian) was to the Sprint Unlimited results. I had Carl Edwards in 8th place, whereas he actually finished 12th. I got my results from Fox Sports, who seem to have got it wrong immediately following the race. Even today the hopeless NASCAR website is still not showing official results, but USA Today is showing the same results that Sebastian has, and Fox is now showing the same results too. Hence the correction.

  4. Actually, I did not notice the Edwards disparity. Likewise, the NASCAR site was refusing to show a result, and I totted up the figures about an hour after the event based on a result I found on Wikipedia, which was not the most reliable source, so it was luck it turned out to be right.

Six drivers we picked, Edwards, Kyle, Kahne, Kenseth, Stewart and Harvick, did not finish in the top-thirty, so do not expect high scores. I know I did not get one. Stupid NASCAR. 😦

It was not a good race. These Generation 6 cars made overtaking next to impossible. If that is not just the case on superspeedways, then it is going to be a soporific season!
