2013 Week Zero

WELCOME TO THE 2013 MOTOR RACING GAME!

WEEK 0 (zero)

Yes, week zero. That seems strange but this is my first attempt at running the game this year, and with the only race in the next three weeks being the WRC Monte Carlo Rally this coming weekend, it seemed a good idea to have a practice run. So please treat this as a real week even though the results won’t count - we’ll actually start with Rally Sweden as week 1.

There will be a couple of changes this year.

First, to try and ease the scoring burden, you’ll need to go to an external website (www.roadracetracks.com/motorracinggame.shtml) to enter your picks. Sorry if this is inconvenient, but it will allow for automated scoring. Also you’ll need a PIN (and maybe a user-id) to make your entries – please e-mail me (from here, or from the external website) your preferred user-id and PIN.

Second, the minimum score percentage for the first four weeks will be 99, 96, 93, then 90% onward.

Finally, please be kind if there’s not the same kind of flair in this year’s post – I’m based in the U.S. and coverage for many of the series is seriously lacking (except of course NASCAR), so I will not be posting the same level of pre and post race commentary as Sebastian was. However I encourage any and all participants to post comments, for the benefit of all, on what went on in the various races as the year progresses.

To reiterate this weeks events:

WRC Monte Carlo Rally

Enter your picks at: www.roadracetracks.com/motorracinggame.shtml

And let me know what you think. Thanks.

  1. Great idea on the automation of the data – I’m sure it took ages to setup, but will pay back in the end!

If you can email me my pin (piston9@gmail.com) that would be awesome… Also if you need any technical backup, let me know (welcome to my day job)

  2. Can we make the picks secret until after the deadline? I felt that the game suffered a bit because people were playing it safe just mirroring each others picks last year?

  3. Oh crap, I did not realise the Monte was this week (I am not really with it at the moment).

Have done the Guide and Links

When is the deadline? I think the rally starts tomorrow morning. Better get my entry sorted.

  4. Rubbergoat – your suggesting makes total sense to me. I’ll adjust the program before week one to only display players’ picks after the deadline.

  5. Drewe – I appreciate the offer for technical backup, but I’m very much an amateur programmer, so frankly would be embarrassed to share my code with anyone! ;)

  6. So am i! :D

Just an offer if you are ever stuck…

  7. All – only the four of us for the practice run. :( To try and get more participants starting week one I’ll post an “advert” on the professional drivers group in LinkedIn. Hopefully it’ll attract some interest.

  8. I’m in a few motorcycle groups on linkedin – link up to your post and I will repost it there if you like…

  9. Guys – great apologies – I accidently irretrievable lost your picks for week zero. Lucky it counted for naught. Oh well – that’s why I wanted a practice week – at least I learnt a lesson so that I shouldn’t do it again when the real competition starts.

  10. doh!

If it’s in SQL, I can give you a real basic script I use for my databases, puts them to text every night automatically and dates them….

  11. Thanks Drewe, I use Perl, but this error was a basic problem of me FTP’ing my own test file of picks from my computer overwriting the live-web version. As you said, Doh!

  12. Do we remember our picks? Chris and I had:

    Sébastian Loeb
    Mikko Hirvonen
    Jari-Matti Latvaia
    Evgeny Novikov
    Sébastien Ogier
    Dani Sordo
    Mads Østberg

iomracer did not have Latvala, but did have (I think) Neuville. Drewe had Hänninen (should have noted in the Guide he is supposed to be a snow-specialist, but I did not know and his old WRC results just looked naff), but I am not sure who he did not have. As this is a practice run, if Drewe remembers, we can trust him, and test the process anyway maybe?

In principle, picks being kept secret until the deadline is the standard practice for a game like this, so players should have that facility as agreed. However, how about players have the option to choose confidential or not as they please? I would suggest even if all confidential that it shows who has entered that week. I might still do e-mail reminders if that is OK with you, iomracer. (When Pat and I overlapped that responsibility, we avoided repetition by always sending the reminders to each other even if already entered).
