Week Thirty

Welcome all to Week Thirty. Just one event to choose from, that being NASCAR Sprint Cup at Watkins Glen. Please pick seven drivers in a comment on this post before 6 AM BST Friday 10th August (1 AM ET) (essentially late Thursday night).

    WRC     Indycar     ALMS     NASCAR
Finland Mid Ohio Mid Ohio Pocono

1    Loeb Dixon #6 Muscle Milk Gordon
2    Hirvonen Power #16 Dyson Kahne
3    Latvala Pagenaud #055 Level 5 Truex
4    Solberg Bourdais #37 Conquest Keselowski
5    Østberg Hinchcliffe #95 Level 5 Stewart
6    Tänak Kannan #52 PR1 Newman
7    Rantanen Briscoe #06 CORE Edwards
8    Ketomaa Andretti #8 Merchant Bowyer
9    Prokop Hildebrand #27 Dempsey Smith
10    Ogier Tagliani #9 RSR Ambrose

As usual, Sébastian Loeb drove only as fast as he needed to for victory. Novikov rolled on stage five, injuring his co-driver’s back, and re-started on Saturday to finish 36th. Atkinson was running top-ten when he misheard a pace-note, getting stuck on a tree-stump to lose sixteen minutes, and then hit a rock on stage nine, also needing to make use of super-rally rules (39th).

Scott Dixon took a record fourth victory at Mid Ohio in a caution-free race with fuel strategy and sharp pit-stops. Castroneves had an engine-penalty ending up only 16th. Hunter-Raey had his engine give out (24th).

The Muscle Milk Pickett HPD took another convincing win. Towards the end, the #20 Dyson was running fifth, but dropped to 13th very late on.

Jimmie Johnson looked in command of the rain-delayed Pocono race until sliding into Kenseth at a re-start. Johnson fell to 14th and Gordon took the lead, with the result called when precipitation resumed.

Congratulations to me, and also to Andy for a strong-scoring week. Commiserations to Chris, who picked the winners but was hit by the most bad luck.

There were a lot of points to be had in WRC with a number of players picking the top-five or top-four finishers. A lot of players were hit by Castroneves and Hunter-Reay having a bad weekend in Mid Ohio. There were also good scores to be had in ALMS for being brave with the P2 favourites, but no one took huge advantage of that, perhaps wisely with the inherent risks.

Patrick gains a place on Chris for fourth place. I extend my lead by a few points with my first win for ages, and Speedgeek’s strong week has him gain ground on those ahead.

This might be a week of sizable points-variation with the uncertainties of Sprint Cup on a road course, followed by some busy weeks.

  2. I’m sticking with the usual suspects but am including the road specialist Ambrose – with his 10th last week, he seems to be ready for a good result at a track he likes:

    1) Jimmy Johnson
    2) Tony Stewart
    3) Jeff Gordon
    4) Marcos Ambrose
    5) Clint Bowyer
    6) Kasey Kahne
    7) Greg Biffle

  3. Lousy luck the last two weeks with Rossi and now Hunter-Reay. Wouldn’t have minded if the alternatives I had pondered hadn’t scored really well.

Might rethink this but for now will take a punt on Montoya. Yes, Juan Pablo.

    Tony Stewart
    Carl Edwards
    Jimmie Johnson
    Brad Keselowski
    Kyle Busch
    Marcos Ambrose
    Juan Pablo Montoya

Nearly picked Allmendinger, which would have been really embarrassing…

  4. I was looking at my picks today and have them down to eight. Allmendinger did briefly appear on my initial short-list.

  5. Congratulations to Gavin, watch out for him tweeking with his selections at unsociable hours of the morning!

  6. Marcos Ambrose
    Juan Pablo Montoya
    Kyle Busch
    Tony Stewart
    Carl Edwards
    Kevin Harvick
    Jimmie Johnson

Brad Keselowski received consideration, but there were not enough results (two) to trust. Kurt Busch so almost made the list, and I have a feeling that he will get a decent result, but I trust the numbers more than a hunch. I would be interested in a version of this game that was NASCAR-only.

  7. Well I could stand a good week this week. Boy have I had a rough go of it recently… one missed week and loads of bad luck last week.

    Here goes:

    Jimmie Johnson
    Tony Stewart
    Jeff Gordon
    Kyle Busch
    Greg Biffle
    Carl Edwards
    Kevin Harvick

  8. I think this is closer than you may think, we’re all picking the guys good at road courses.

    Ambrose
    J Gordon
    Stewart
    Johnson
    Kyle Busch
Montoya (a gamble – he may end up in the gravel somewhere)
    Biffle

  9. Hmmm.. Been to busy to look, so going on memory of results.

Ambrose (we’ve seen him before in NASCAR road courses, he’s awesome. I still remember him in V8′s in Aus, the boy can drive)
    Edwards
    Stewart
Earnhardt (My gamble pick for this week – often does well enough for top ten, is keen not to wreck)
    Johnson
Montoya (Debated this one – he’s fast, agressive, not sure he has the car for it though…)
    Gordon (Jeff)

  10. Marcos Ambrose
    Kyle Busch
    Tony Stewart
    Carl Edwards
